To revive the economy of the young state after the Revolution the NEP (New Economy Policy) was instituted. It permitted limited capitalist competition and was a compromise with capitalism. In respond to that new circumstances the famous brilliant futurist poet Vladimir Mayakovsky in collaboration with the artist, photographer, designer Alexander Rodchenko made ads for the state-run industries, newly born state enterprises (such as the largest department store GUM; the famous Soviet grocery the Mosselprom, the Rezinotrest (Rubber Trust), etc.) which faced the competition from the private sector. Mayakovsky wrote the slogans and Rodchenko created graphic designs using constructivist principles and innovative techniques such as photomontage. They marked their work with "Mayakovsky-Rodchenko. Advertising-Constructor" sign.
Two giants of avant-garde designed high-impact posters or packaging for products such as cigarettes, bread, sweets and biscuits and so on. It is interesting that those works promoted Communist ideology as well as state products. It was commercial art in the Soviet reality, unique Soviet "advertising agitation" which distinctive feature was the ideological component and propaganda. The posters were everywhere. Rodvechko wrote: "All of Moscow is decorated with our products". In modern Russia, there are exhibitions of the works of the famous tandem.
